Breckenridge is a well know mountain town in Colorado. It is mostly know for its incredible skiing but this mountain town is a great place to visit in the summer as well. There are tons of fun things to do with kids of all ages and summertime is the perfect time to come and visit this amazing town.

Breckenridge is located about 2 hours from the Denver airport which is where most visitors will fly in from. The drive is very scenic but it can get busy during the weekends. I always suggest driving in the mornings and to try and avoid weekends especially in the summer.

This post will help you plan your perfect trip to Breckenridge. I will go into detail about all of the family friendly things to do in this city and the best places to eat in downtown Breckenridge.

Where to Stay:

There are lots of great places to stay in Breckenridge and there are accommodations for every budget. I have stayed at both hotels and vacation rentals when visiting Breckenridge; both have advantages and it just depends on what you are looking for when visiting. Below are some of my personal recommendations on the best places to stay when visiting Breckenridge.

Residence Inn Breckenridge: This hotel is located right on the edge of downtown Breckenridge. This location is perfect if you want to be within walking distance to downtown Breckenridge. There is also a outdoor pool and hot tub that is open year round. There are lots of different suites avaliable which makes this hotel an excellent choice for families.

Grand Lodge Peak 7: This beautiful hotel is located right on the ski slopes at peak 7 (if you couldn’t already guess that). There are all different suites avaliable with up to four bedrooms if you need a lot of space. There are hot tubs and outdoor pools that the kids will love.

Grand Timber Lodge: This hotel has more of an apartment style feel with several different bedroom options and kitchenettes. There is also a nice pool area and a kid pool as well. This place is located close to the mountain and downtown area which is a perfect location in my opinon.

Vacation Rentals: The last time we stayed in Breckenridge, we opted to stay in an Airbnb. We rented this condo which is within walking distance to Peak 8 and a short drive from the downtown area. It was a perfect place to stay and had two bedrooms which we really appreciate when staying somewhere with two kids. I would highly recommend this place for families staying in Breckenridge.

Where to Eat with Kids:

Breckenridge has a great variety of places to eat at in its downtown area. A lot of the places have both indoor and outdoor seating which I love during the summer. We love sitting on outdoor patios especially when visiting mountain towns. Below are some of the places that we enjoyed going with our two small children when visiting Breckenridge.

The Canteen Tap House: This place is located right on Main Street in downtown Breckenridge. It serves a good variety of American comfort food and has a great outdoor patio. We really enjoyed this place and the kids loved watching all the people walking down main street.

Empire Burger: If you are looking for a good burger place, this place should be on your list to visit when in Breckenridge. This place is known for having an amazing selection of sauces to put on your burger. The kids loved this place and enjoyed picking out their dipping sauces.

Downstairs at Eric’s: This place has a great atmosphere with an arcade, photo booth and great beer selection for the adults. They have a huge menu and are famous for their pizza and wings. This is the perfect place to take kids and they have good food as well.

Sancho Tacos: This place is another great restaurant to visit when in Breckenridge. If you are looking for some Mexican food while in town, look no further than this place. They have delicious food especially their unique selection of tacos.

Breckenridge Brewpub: This brewhouse is a great place to relax after a day of exploring in Breckenridge. They have a good variety of food and they have some great beer for the adults. Our kids enjoyed the kids menu and they also have a nice outdoor seating area.

Crepes A La Cart: This is a must visit place when in Breckenridge. They serve both sweet and savory crepes that are delicious. The kids kept asking to go back for more crepes.

Where to Hike With Kids:

Breckenridge has tons of hiking trails in the city and the surrounding areas. Below are a few of our favorite hikes that are very easy to do with kids.

Trollstigen Trail (Breckenridge Troll Hike): This is not really considered a hike but more of a short stroll from the parking area. This is a must do hike for anyone when visiting Breckenridge because this is the home of the famous troll Isak Heartstone. The walk itself is maybe a quarter mile long and it is very flat.

This is a must see thing when visiting Breckenridge. Our kids loved seeing the troll and the walk was very easy for them. Our four year old still talks about seeing the “giant troll” in the mountains.

This trailhead is located right next to the Stephen C. West Ice arena. Make sure not to park in the ice arena parking lot; there is a designated parking area for the hiking trails that you can park at instead.

Illinois Creek Trailhead: This trailhead is located right next to Trollstigen Trail which makes it a perfect hike to do after seeing Isak. This trail makes a full loop around and it is only 1.3 miles long. It is very easy with very little elevation gain. Our kids had no problem doing this trail and enjoyed the hike through the woods.

The parking for this trailhead is the same as the parking for Trollstigen Trail. Again, make sure not to park in the Ice Arena parking lot.

Sawmill Creek Trail: This is another great family friendly hike. This trail is very easy for kids but it does have some incline. This trail follows along a river and then eventually ends at a lake. The views are beautiful and the hike is perfect for kids.

There is not a lot of parking for this trailhead so I would suggest doing this hike early in the day so you can guarantee yourself a spot to park at.

Other Things to Do With Kids in Breckenridge:

There are so many other great things to do in Breckenridge during the summer months. These are some of our favorite things to do besides hiking with our kids when visiting in the summer.

BreckConnect Gondola: This gondola is a must do when in Breckenridge. It is free to ride and there is a parking lot located right where you get on the gondola. This was one of our kids favorite things to do when in Breckenridge. We rode it twice during our weekend and it was so much fun each time.

You can catch the gondola right near downtown Breckenridge. The gondola goes up the mountain and ends at Peak 8 where you will find dining options and other mountain activities. Our kids were a little young to do any of the activities up top but there are lots of options for older kids.

We spent our time walking around the base of the mountain and enjoying the beautiful views. Each gondola can accomodate up to 8 people but you can have an entire gondola to yourself if you choose. The gondola is also big enough to fit a stroller if you want to bring one. I would recommend a baby carrier if you have little ones as it was much easier than bringing a stroller.

River Park Playground: This is a terrific playground located just on the outskirts of Breckenridge. It is a nature based playground with a rubber surface. There are lots of fun elements at this playground including a sand digging pit.

This playground is located right next to a river. It is very scenic and there is a great bridge to walk across. There are also several areas to have a picnic at. We brought picnic lunches and ate right next to the river. The kids loved this park and the picnic as well.

Parking is available right on the street next to the park.

Highline Railroad Park: This cute park is located right next to the Ice Arena. This park is railroad themed and a big hit with the kids. There is also a real train engine and boxcar that you can go inside as well.

There are lots of picnic tables available at this park as well. They are all spaced out around the park so you can have a little more privacy if you want.

Parking is located at the Ice Arena. You are allowed to park in the Ice Arena parking if you are just visiting this park. I went in and asked just to be sure and they said that it was perfectly fine as long as we were just enjoying the park and not doing the nearby hiking trails.

Epic Discovery: This place encompasses all of the activities located at Peak 8 which is where the gondola will take you. There are so many different activities to choose from and kids will love this place.

We did not partake in any of the activities during our visit since our kids were a little small but we will be back again to try it out. Some of the highlights of Epic Discovery are the Gold Runner Alpine Coaster and the Apline Slide. There are several different types of passes you can buy if you want to enjoy more than one activity. You can see all the different options on their website.

Breckenridge is a great place to visit with kids of all ages. Summer is a great time to visit with so many amazing things to do. If you are looking for a family friendly mountain town, look no further than Breckenridge.
