Whenever we stay at an all inclusive resort, we always make it a point to get out of the hotel for at least a day and do some sort of excursion. This year we decided to go and see the blue hole and secret falls that are located in Ocho Rios. Our excursion was with a company called Your Jamaican Tour Guide. It was private tour for 6 people which included pick up and drop off at our hotel, drinks on the drive to and from the Secret falls, entrance fees to the park, a guided tour inside the park, and lunch on the way back from the Secret falls. Our guide was excellent and I would highly recommend using this company for any excursion that you want to do in Jamaica.

What to expect on the Drive

Since we were staying about two hours away from Ocho Rios, our tour guide came to pick us up around 8:00am. We got inside a comfortable van and we were on our way. I felt that we learned a lot about the history and culture of Jamaica on our ride to the blue hole and secret falls. Once we got toward the entrance, we made our way up some winding dirt roads. Once you get to the end of the road, there is a parking lot and our driver introduced us to our tour guide for the blue hole and secret falls part of our excursion. It is a good idea to wear water shoes during this tour. There are lots of slippery rocks and paths that you walk on as you make your way up the waterfalls.

When you arrive

The water at the blue hole is so blue. The location is very secluded and shaded so you don’t really need any sunscreen or sunglasses. You do a fair bit of walking up the falls so that is why water shoes are recommended. You can also leave your towels at the start of the walk up the falls. If you forget water shoes or towels, there are plenty of places that you can purchase them while you are making your way to the blue hole. Another thing is that they have a photographer taking pictures of your whole group during the tour. You can purchase the pictures at the end of the tour if you want. You can also take your own water cameras or go-pros along the way as well. We did both; we had cameras and we bought the pictures at the end of the tour. They took some really great action shots of us.

A good tip about visiting the blue hole and secret falls is to avoid visiting on Mondays and Wednesdays. This is the time that cruise ships are typically at ports in Jamaica. This can mean a busier day with more people. The only good thing about the blue hole is that the large tour buses cannot make it up the narrow dirt roads. This means only small group tours can even access the blue hole and secret falls.

What to Expect When Visiting

The blue hole and secret falls is located in the jungle away from other tourist attractions. It was not very busy when we went to visit which made it all the more enjoyable. Our tour started with us getting in the water right away and swimming around in the blue hole. After this, we continued to climb up several waterfalls til we made our way to the top. Once you get to the top, you get to jump of small cliffs into pools of beautiful blue water to make your way down. There are 4-5 spots where you get to jump off of a variety of cliffs, all with different heights. There is also a rope swing at the very last pool that you jump into as well. Some of the jump are a little more scary than others. The scariest one was when you walk down an actual waterfall and jump into the water below about halfway down. It’s scary walking down but the rock is very grippy and this is where the water shoes come in handy as well.

The water is very cold when you first get in as this is a naturally occurring spring. Once you get used to it, the water is just fine. You are in and out of the water during the entire tour. If you are afraid of heights, no worries. You do not have to do the cliff jumps if you don’t want to. There are paths that the guides will take you on so you can meet up with the rest of your group if you don’t want to jump. I would still recommend getting in the water and swimming around. The water is such a beautiful color of blue. I would recommend this tour to anyone who loves natural beauty and adventure. The cliff jumping was fun and the scenery was beautiful. I would also recommend doing this tour with Your Jamaican Tour Guide. They were excellent and took great care of us. You can read my review of our tour with them as well.

The Blue Hole and Secret Falls is located near Ocho Rios. It is located near the famous Dunn’s River Falls but is much more secluded. I have personally been on both tours before and while they are each unique and cool, I think that the Secret Falls was much less commercialized and more fun.

In order to get to the Blue Hole, you have to arrange a small group tour. This is one of the biggest perks of this park being so secluded. Large tour buses cannot make it up the windy dirt roads that lead to the blue hole so there are lot less people in this park. We went with a tour company called Your Jamaican Tour Guide. We had a private tour for 6 people and could not have asked for a better experience. I would highly recommended them for this tour.

Depending on where you are staying in Jamaica, the ride to the blue hole can be a bit long. Our ride was about 2 hours and we stayed close to Negril. Even thought the ride was long, our tour guide kept us entertained and we learned a lot about the history and culture of Jamaica. The ride was fairly smooth and we were excited once we got to the blue hole.

Things to Bring

There are a few things you should know before visiting. The first is that the entire park is located inside a shaded jungle. You won’t need sunscreen or sunglasses during your tour. You should plan on bringing water shoes along as well. There is a bit of walking involved and the rocks can get slippery at times. The water shoes help with gripping the rock and making climbing up the waterfalls much easier. You are allowed to bring in towels and there is a place to leave them near the start of your tour if you want to. You can also bring waterproof cameras if you wish as well. We brought several water cameras with us during the tour. Another thing to note is that there are people taking pictures during your tour. They use nice cameras and you can purchase the pictures at the end of the tour. You get a chance to preview the pictures before you buy them as well. We really liked all of the fun action shots that they took so we decided to purchase the CD of pictures. It costs about $40.00 and there is always room for some negotiations as well.

You get to spend a good amount of time in each pool after you jump off the cliffs. You just have to make sure to stay clear of all the people jumping in after you. It was very relaxing towards the end of the tour where the rope swing is located. We all took a few turns on the rope swing and just swam around in the beautiful blue waters. When our tour was done, we were offered the chance to see our pictures and purchase them if we wanted. After this, you are taken back up to the parking lot where your driver is waiting for you.

Overall, the blue hole and secret falls tour was really fun and exciting. The cliff jumping was really cool and we enjoyed all the beautiful scenery. I would highly recommend this tour to people who want adventure in a beautiful, natural setting. This tour is also ideal for those who are looking to get off the beaten path and prefer less crowds.
