Hamilton Island is the largest island in the Whitsundays off the coast of mainland Australia. It is the only island in the Great Barrier Reef that has a commercial airport which makes it much easier to access than other islands. We flew from Cairns to get here and it was a very short flight. We spent a total of 4 days on the island as an end to our few weeks in Australia. It was a great way to relax after a busy couple of weeks exploring the mainland of Australia. We had an amazing time on the island and would go back in a heart beat.

Where to stay:

We stayed at the Beach Club Resort and it was an amazing experience. It is an adults only, boutique style hotel. Every room comes with a private terrace or balcony with beautiful views. We had a room right on the beach and daily breakfast was included. It was very quiet and secluded and the beach was never busy during the day. The hotel also had kayaks, paddle boards and sailing included with the stay. We enjoyed lots of time on the beach during our stay and really enjoyed the beach right in front of this hotel.

There are few convenient things that are included during your stay at Beach Club. There is a VIP return service to the airport at the end of your stay and there is a point to point chauffeur service as well. Some other things included during your stay are a daily breakfast, use of catamarans, windsurfers, kayaks, stand up paddle boards and snorkeling equipment. There is also a beautiful infinity pool, onsite restaurant, and beautiful beach access.

Since the island is very small, it was very easy to walk most places we wanted to go from the hotel. We usually would walk down to the harbor for dinner and enjoy the beautiful views and sunsets. You can also get chauffer service down to the harbor as well if you don’t feel like walking.

Things to know when visiting the island:

Hamilton Island is a very small island but can be easily reached from mainland Australia. It was a very short flight from the city of Cairns. Since it is a very small island, there are no cars on the island. They use golf carts to get around the entire island which makes the island seem very remote and private.

There are several restaurants to eat at near the marina on the island. We ate near the marina several nights during our stay on the island. There are beautiful views from many of the restaurants so it is definitely worth a trip to the marina.

A few of our favorite restaurants that we ate at were Popeye’s Takeaway, Manta Ray, and TAKO. These are all located at the marina. We also ate at our hotel’s restaurant a few times which was very good as well.

How to spend your time on Hamilton Island:

When you first arrive on the island, you can enjoy some beach time or check out the island’s marina. There are lots of nice beaches on the island so we decided to relax during our first day on the island. Our hotel was right on the beach so we enjoyed some beach time and took some stand up paddle boards out on the water. One thing to remember is that if you visit during the months of November thru March, jellyfish are more present in the water. We didn’t have any issues with jellyfish, but the hotels would occasionally announce that there were jellyfish sightings or someone got stung nearby.

Another thing that you can do is take a walk or golf cart around the island. We enjoyed seeing different parts of the island and it was a leisurely way to see the island.

The best thing you can do when visiting the island is to take a day trip to Whitehaven Beach. It is a beautiful beach with pure white sand and it is a must see in the Whitsundays. The sand is 98% silica so it never gets hot and it even squeaks when you walk on it!

We took a day trip with Cruise Whitsundays. They picked us up at the marina and then we got to spend lots of time on the beach, swimming and hiking some trails to beautiful vantage points. Since we visited during jellyfish season, we did rent stinger suits to be on the safe side when swimming but it is not necessary. The only things we saw in the water were sea turtles and reef sharks. If you want to learn more about our day trip with Cruise Whitsundays, you can read my post about our day here.

Overall, Hamilton Island is a beautiful island to visit. We spent our last few days of our Australian trip here and it was a great way to relax and unwind after traveling around the country for several weeks.
