San Diego is a great family friendly destination that can be visited year round. There are so many things to see and do in this city which make it a perfect choice to visit with your family.

One of the most important things to do when planning a trip is booking your accomodations. When I book accomodations, the things that I prioritize depend on if I am traveling with our kids or not. When traveling with the kids (which is what we do the majority of the time), we focus on location the most. We like to be conveniently located to the things we want to do with the kids so we don’t have to spend lots of time driving.

The other things that we take into consideration when traveling with young kids is ammenties and budget. Both our kids love the pool so we try to stay at a hotel with a pool when we can.

I am going to share my review of our stay at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay and why I think it is an excellent family friendly hotel to stay at while visiting San Diego.

Hotel Location:

The Hyatt Regency is located right in the heart of Mission Bay. It is actually on the water and they have a nice boardwalk that you can access through the hotel grounds. The hotel also has incredible views of the bay from their hotel rooms.

Mission Bay is a great area to base yourself if you want to be close to beaches and other popular destinations in the city. This hotel is less than five minutes to Sea World and you can even take a ferry over to Sea World from this hotel if you do not feel like driving.

La Jolla is also a popular spot to visit when in San Digeo. This hotel is about 15 minutes from downtown La Jolla where you can see the famous sea lions and seals. La Jolla Shores Beach is also not much further away and this is the beach I highly recommend for families. You can see my full post about La Jolla Shores Beach here

San Diego Zoo is another popular attraction to visit when in the area. The zoo is about 15-20 minutes from this hotel which is perfect when visiting with kids. We were able to arrive right when the zoo opened since we did not have to drive very far. You can read my full post about the San Diego Zoo here

This hotel is very close to downtown San Diego as well. We went to dinner a few nights in the downtown area and it was less than a 10 minute drive to get there. Other popular places to go that are within 15 minutes of this hotel are Belmont Park, Ocean Beach, and Coronado Island.

In my opinion, this hotel was in the perfect location to see many different things throughout the San Diego area. It made traveling to different areas of the city with small children super easy.

The Check-in Process:

The check- in process was super easy at this hotel. I was able to check in the day before and request that our room be ready earlier than the standard 4:00pm time. I know that this does not always work out but we were able to check in right when we arrived at the hotel. This was great considering we were traveling with two small kids.

Everything about check in was very smooth. We were able to go up to our room right away and you can do everything from your phone if you want to. We requested to have one actual key just in case which they were more than happy to accomodate.

Check out is also very easy and can be done the day before. You have to leave by 11:00am but you can request a late check out or let them know if you leave early. Overall, the whole check in and check out went very smoothly.

The Hotel Rooms:

Like most hotel rooms, this hotel offers the standard rooms with either two queen beds or one king bed. We were upgraded to a suite which gave us some extra room with the two kids. We requested a pack and play on arrival which was already set up in our room when we got there.

If you are traveling with small children, I would highly recommend staying in one of the suites. It gave us some much needed room with the two kids and we had our own little area at night when they went to sleep.

All of the rooms at the Hyatt Regency also have a balcony. This was an added bonus and the kids loved going out there to look out at the pool area and the bay in the distance. It was also a nice place for my husband and I to go at night after the kids were asleep.

Hotel Ammenities:

The Hyatt Regency has tons of great ammenities that make it the perfect place to stay with kids. The first one of course is the amazing pool area. The pool area consists of three pools. There is even a zero entry pool for the youngest kids which we appreciated with our toddlers. There are also three water slides which was the highlight for our kids. There are two tall water slides that have a height requirement but there is one slide that anyone can go down. The pool area was perfect for some mid-afternoon downtime after sightseeing in the mornings.

There are also several restaurants onsite as well. There is one right by the pool that does offer kids under 12 free refreshments. This one is called Pelican’s on the Bay. There is also a Market which serves coffee and pastries. The last restaurant is right on the bay and is called Red Marlin. We did not have a chance to dine at any of these places except the coffee shop during our stay but it was nice knowing there were restaurants close by.

Another great thing that was offered at this hotel was a wide array of water sports. You do need to pay extra for them but they are avaliable right at the hotel if this interests you. They did give us a free hour of paddle boarding to use during our stay when we checked in. They also offer jet skis, fishing tours, whale watching charters and kayaking.

Parking:

The Hyatt Regency does charge guests to park their cars during their stay. This seemed to be a pretty standard thing among hotels in the San Diego area. I had a hard time finding a hotel that did not charge for parking so this was not a deal breaker when choosing to stay at this hotel.

There were two options when it came to parking: self park and valet parking. Obviously, self park was a little cheaper so we chose that option. You can visit their website for the prices to park your car. It seems to change so this is the best way to know exactly what you can expect to pay. I believe we payed about $30/day for our car to be parked in self park.

The parking lot is very close to the hotel entrance so that did make it easy when unloading with kids. There is some street parking avaliable near the hotel as well if you want to avoid parking costs.

Overall, we loved staying at the Hyatt Regency during our stay in San Diego. It was close to all the places that we wanted to explore and the ammenities made it the perfect place to relax after a day of sightseeing. They were very accomodating toward kids and the pool are was a definite highlight.

If you are looking for a place to stay with your family in the San Diego area, look no further that the Hyatt Regency. It is in the perfect location and has a lot to offer families. It is definitely worth the price to stay at this hotel.
